This year's year end musical production, presented by grade 2 students, is all about reducing, reusing and recycling.  Students are sending their message out to the community by singing, dancing, playing, and performing!

Pull tabs for Ronald MacDonald House

This was a brand new initiative this year brought to the school's attention by our yongest leaders, the Kindergarten students.  Together Kindergarten presented the project at a leadership assembly and got support for their collection drive.

The statistics below show how collecting pull tabs can directly help sick children and their families staying at the House. Start collecting now and help us provide a home away from home for sick children and their families...

5lbs = Could help make two dozen cookies for families at the House

10lbs = Could purchase laundry soap for three days worth of laundry at the House

25lbs = Could provide a movie night and popcorn for families at the House

50lbs = Could provide a warm meal for a family who just arrived at the House

100lbs  = Could pay for a monthly Birthday Celebration for children staying at the House

250lbs = Could buy arts and crafts supplies for the Family Recreation Program

21st Century Competency:

We are civically engaged.  We are financially and economically literate.  Kindergarten students not only recycled the pull tabs, which is caring for our planet and maximizing our resources, they also chose a project that had positive ramifications for their surrounding community and children in need.  Financial literacy at a young age is simply being aware of the cost of goods and services and learning to be responsible users of those goods.  The students got to see their work collecting tabs traded for cash used to buy supplies needed by Ronald MacDonald House.

Plastic Covers: #92 - 126

Re-usable plastic covers

At a considerable initial investment the school has purchased a class set of these reusable dry erase pockets for every single class in the school.  With almost 800 children in the building that's al ot of vinyl pockets!

Not only does this represent a considerable saving in photocopying and laminating it represents a significant shift in the way teachers and students approach teaching and learning at Edwards.  This type of decision is evidence that not only are Edwards students and teachers aware of the waste they produce over the course of the year, they are also reevaluating the value of worksheets in general.  They are looking fro better more authentic ways to learn!

These were purchased in May, we look froward to seeing how they are implemented across every grade in the fall.

Vermicompost: #90 - 91

Indoor, vermi-composting

Using a rubbermade container, red wigglers, newsprint and som soil grade 4 students began composting their lunch and snack remains in the fall.  The bin is now full of rich compost that can be used on the flower beds in the school yard.  This bin is at the front of the class just under the white board.  No, it doesn't smell and yes, that's a rotting apple core in the bottom photo.

Butterflies: #85 - 89

Life Cycle Study

Students learned about the life cycle of butterflies as well as the valuable role pollinators play in our world.  Release is yet to come!  Stay tuned . . .

Students were thrilled to be raising their very own painted lady butterfly larvae, and so mini houses had to made out of unifix cubes.

Clean Sweep: #50 - 84

City of Airdrie Clean Sweep

Students join with The City of Airdrie to participate in Clean Sweep, a community wide event to clean up garbage around the community.  Our school, almost 800 student strong literally swept across the school playground, fields and along neighbourhood sidewalks.

What is most significant about this day is that following the official clean sweep students in grade 2 continued to clear the playground of litter, spending their recess time picking up garbage of their own accord to maintain the green grass and litter free play space.  Way to be proactive grade 2!

Birdhouses: #41 - 49

Birdhouses to provide nesting for local birds

Students in Grades 1 and 3 enjoyed a visit from the Calgary Bird Man to learn how to build birdhouses appropriate for local birds.  By bringing in experts in an area of discipline (like the Stream of Dreams Project or Green Start) students' learning extends beyond the classroom.

Presentations by experts in specific fields give students an idea of how environmental stewardship translates to careers in environmental science.
